TV Edwards LLP has two positions open within its Mental Health Department in Whitechapel. 

Mental Health Panel Accredited Fee Earner

We seek an experienced fee earner who is already a member of the Law Society’s Mental Health Panel Accreditation. You will need experience in all aspects of mental health work including representing patients detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act. You will be expected to build and maintain your own caseload.

Paralegal Position

A paralegal is needed to support fee earners within the department to help with growth and organisation. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work closely with senior fee earners with a view to becoming a member of the Law Society’s Mental Health Panel Accreditation. 

Both candidates will be organised, hard working team players. Full training and supervision will be provided on all work you will be expected to undertake. There will be an element of billing and general administration attached to the role. You will need strong administrative qualities together with excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to run a caseload of mental health matters, which will include representing clients before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health), at Hospital Managers hearings and at CPA meetings. They will be expected to work with clients in general psychiatric wards as well as secure hospitals and with clients in the community. They will be based in our City of London office, which is a short walk from Blackfriars or St Pauls Underground Station. The role will involve travel outside of the office to visit clients within and outside of London.

It is essential that the successful candidate has an excellent academic background and solid experience of working with clients with mental health difficulties.

It is desirable for candidates to have experience in cases before the Upper-tier Tribunal and unlawful detention cases involving mental health clients. Experience in representing clients before the Court of Protection is also advantageous.

This position is permanent and on a full time basis with an immediate start.

The role involves representing mental health clients at Tribunals and generally – experience of Upper Tribunal appeals will differentiate but is not essential. As a firm we are fortunate enough to run many interesting cases at Tribunal level, on appeal to the Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals Chamber) and on occasion all the way to the Supreme Court.

The department as you might expect is busy and there is quite a lot of ‘running around’ which goes hand in hand with keeping on top of the paperwork. Knowledge of compliance in terms of the LAA and Lexcel would also be very beneficial.
