Desirable

  3. Previous experience (not essential as full training can be offered)

  3. An ability to work independently within guidelines given and as part of a team

  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Due to the nature of our work and location of specialist courts (hearings are often held in Truro, Exeter, Bristol, Bournemouth) working outside office hours will be required from time-to-time. A driving licence and own transport is desirable. Working partly remotely is an option.

Salary is dependent upon level of experience and qualifications. Both are full-time posts but applicants seeking a part-time position will also be considered.

This is a demanding and challenging role for lawyers with a genuine commitment to law and civil liberties. The candidate must be able to meet the LAA requirements. Minimum three years of community care experience with the proven track record and examples of work in different areas of community care law. Experience of supervising other lawyers is essential. The candidate must show that they have 350 hours per annum of direct casework over the past three years and they are not acting as a supervisor elsewhere.

The candidates should have:

Mental Health Fee Earners – London, Birmingham and Leeds

GT Stewart Solicitors and Advocates is a Legal 500 and Chambers UK recommended firm. We are recruiting experienced Mental Health Fee Earners to join our mental health teams in our London, Birmingham and Leeds offices.

Candidates who are accredited under Law Society’s Mental Health Accreditation Scheme will be expected to run a caseload of mental health matters, which will include representing clients before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health), at Hospital Managers hearings and at CPA/s.117 meetings. They will be expected to work with clients detained in various levels of security as well as those in the community. We primarily represent P in welfare cases, most frequently instructed on P’s behalf by the Official Solicitor, and we also represent family members. Experience of mental capacity matters, best interests and welfare issues in the Court of Protection is essential.

We are looking for a paralegal to join our expanding and dynamic Court of Protection team consisting of four solicitors (including one director – Maria Nicholas), and three trainee solicitors.

We are Lexcel accredited, and have contracts with the LAA in community care and mental health. We have been rated Category 1 (Excellence) for Mental Health and Court of Protection in our most recent peer review. We primarily represent ‘P’ in welfare cases, most frequently instructed on ‘P’s behalf by the Official Solicitor. We also represent family members.

We are looking for a paralegal to join the team and to assist our solicitors with their Court of Protection work primarily; we also conduct community care cases and there will be opportunities to advise and assist community care clients. We provide detailed training and there is scope for able individuals to attend court with counsel, meet with clients and draft documents in court proceedings.

Those successful in their application will have the opportunity of a training contract, subject to performance. We are looking for strong academic, diligent and conscientious individuals with an interest in the areas of law we specialise in, and motivation to progress within the firm. Experience of Court of Protection and community care work is not required.
